Mustang love

Personal

I’ve loved Mustangs since forever. I’ve always been obsessed with wild Mustangs, despite being Dutch and growing up in Europe.

Yet every time I’d see wild horses running in a movie or tv show, I’d start crying. I don’t know why. I feel a connection with them. To me they are such a huge part of American history and freedom, they are icons.

When I fell head over heels in love with a horse last year I had no idea he was a Mustang, until I asked for more info about him.

When they told me he was a Mustang and used to be wild, I got it. I got why I fell for him without ever having ridden him. We connected, we clicked, we have such a strong bond and he’s not even my horse…

But I adore him, Mustangs are different. The connection you can have with them, is unlike anything else.

Last week I got to celebrate Independence Day in the US for the first time and I never would have dared dream that I’d be spending my first 4th of July in the States on the back of Mustangs. Most of it on my favourite boy, Ocho, but also an hour on Spirit, a strong willed Mustang mare.

I don’t think I ever feel more alive than on the back of Ocho when we are loping through the desert. He makes me smile like nobody else does. He never lets me down, he’s been one of the two guys in my life who’s been there for me unconditionally, no questions asked.

Horses teach you more about yourself then about them and I couldn’t be more thankful for them.
